Counting backwards is hard

I had all of these aspirations that August was going to be different. August was going to be the month that I really turned things around and started taking control of my life and all aspects in it. I started out strong. It is now mid-month and I am faltering in the direction that I usually fall into – the easy, comfortable, uninspired way of doing things.

What happened? I stopped counting backwards, that’s what.

I started out the month really using the 5 Second Rule. All you have to do to use the rule is to count backwards from 5 and then take action. It sounds really simple. It is. That doesn’t mean it is easy though. It means that you have to fight yourself all the time to actually take action. It is easy to think about something and then disregard it as a bad idea, a stupid idea, or something that would never work. It is amazing how quickly your brain can go from being so excited about something to discounting it. Actually, it takes about five seconds.

If you haven’t read or listened to the book “The 5 Second Rule” by Mel Robbins, do it. Seriously. You will change the way you look at things and how you take action, or more importantly, don’t take action. There are so many ways that you can use the rule. The reason the rule works in all cases is that it is you that is using the rule and not what you are using it on.

5.4.3.2.1…go

I am using this mid-month check in as a reality check that I know what needs to be done to feel better, achieve more and have more fulfilment. No more putting of what can be done later. No more procrastinating. No more talking myself out of things because I don’t feel like doing something or I don’t think it’s a good idea. If I came up with the idea in the first place, there must be a reason. I have to stop talking myself out of things because I don’t want to actually follow through.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

You know what is even more interesting about the famous Wayne Gretzky quote is thinking about the other side of it. You may regret the shots that you don’t take, but you won’t regret the shots that you do take. So what if things don’t work out perfectly. At least you tried. And, if you try, who knows what you’ll accomplish.

If you’ve had a good start to the month too and fallen off the ambition train, get back on! I am going to. I am going to 5.4.3.2.1 myself into a productive, happy rest of the month! You should do the same.
