‘Tis the season

It’s almost that season again. No, I am not talking about the holiday season. I am talking about the Resolution Season. That wonderful time of year when virtually everyone makes vows to themselves to live a better life, to eat better, to exercise more, to be nicer, to save money, etc, etc

This year my one of my resolutions is going to be to eat cleaner. I am going to focus on eating whole foods, staying away from processed junk and trying to reduce the amount of sugar that I intake. I try to base my diet on a Paleo-style plan. I know that when I eat that way I am cognizant of what is going in my body. I take a minute to think about what I am eating before I chow down. Sure, sometimes I eat things that aren’t good for me, but for the most part I think about them first and make the choice to eat them. I don’t mindlessly eat anymore.

Another resolution is going to be to drink more water on a daily basis. Drinking a lot of water throughout the day is a necessity to be healthy. Sometimes though water doesn’t sound that great. It is easier to drink water when there is something else involved – like a flavouring. I have found a great trick to making me drink more water. It is to add a drop or two of Citrus Fresh essential oil to the water. It makes the water taste like a creamsicle. Seriously. It is like I am drinking a yummy creamsicle. I want more and more. That means I am drinking more and more water. There aren’t any added calories and because the oils are taken from the rind they aren’t acidic to your teeth like adding a lemon. Sometimes, if I want to make my water super amazing, I will add a drop of peppermint too. The taste is a fresh, fruity and pepperminty. I don’t even know if pepperminty is a word, but it should be.

Adding essential oils to water is a great way to make the water taste more exciting without adding chemicals, sweeteners or any fake substances. There are a number of essential oils that would work great in water including orange, lemon, grapefruit, citrus fresh, tangerine and peppermint. If you are looking for a good way to increase your water intake, this little trick can really help. I am sipping on some peppermint water right now and it tastes delicious!
